Ballet is Art

Ballet is not only a form of dance, it is an art. Ballet dance is definitely different from the other forms of dance. Ballet dancing is graceful, elegant and beautiful. The pronunciation of the word ballet is “ballay” and the “t” is silent. The word “ballet” means to dance. Ballet is highly technical and it even has its own vocabulary. Ballet is taught throughout the world in ballet schools.

As with many other dance forms, ballet is choreographed rather than danced free. These choreographed routines are known as ballets and encompass not only dancing skills but also acting, musicality and mime. Although some of the music may be vocal, most ballets are performed to classical music.

Renaissance Italy was where ballet dancing first began but it would be France who would take the original dance style and create an entire culture from it. King Louis XIV was instrumental in this, and the world’s first ballet school opened in France in 1661. It’s the French roots that are the reason for most of the ballet vocabulary that’s still used today being. Originally only men were ballet dancers but in 1681 women were also allowed to join in.

Ballet dancers were multi-performers. They didn’t just dance, but they would also recite poetry and sing songs that they may have wrote themselves. Modern ballet contains the dance steps that were created in those early years, and most of these steps still have their French names.

Modern ballet centralizes around 5 basic positions, and this too dates back to Seventeenth century France when a choreographer called Pierre Beauchamp created them. Mastering these basic positions is pivotal to developing the balance and posture required to become a good ballet dancer.

Ballet has become mainstream in countries like Russia, Denmark, France and the United States. Ballet is a worldwide phenomenon. Professional ballet schools are taught in every continent in the world. New York has become the mecca of ballet dancing and it is considered the best on the globe.

Female ballet dancers are known as “ballerinas”. Ballerinas perform dance movements that have to be executed with the use of their toes. This form of dancing is called “en pointe”. A ballerina has to be 12 years of age before she can begin dancing en pointe. Ballerinas wear pointe shoes. Pointe shoes are cushioned with lambs wool or a foam pad. These shoes look like slippers. Ribbons are tied around the ankles and feet, so the shoes can be usable. The shoes are stiff and they have to be cushioned with soft fabric so the dancers do not injure themselves while performing.

At one time a ballet costume was a dress that went down to the ankle. Today’s female ballet dancers wear tutus which give the illusion that the ballerina is floating across the stage.

Danseurs are male ballet dancers and they never dance ‘En Pointe’. As they are usually required to lift a ballerina during the ballets, danseurs have to have a great level of physical fitness.

If you’ve never seen a ballet, then try to get tickets to attend one of the top ballet companies when they perform near you. It’s an experience you’ll never forget. You’ll have to act fast though because those tickets tend to sell out fast!

1. Ballet is all about stretching. It’s used to strengthen muscle groups as well as warm them up ready for dance. The stretching assists in posture and helps to lengthen the body. It’s vital that all ballet dancers participate in a stretching workout prior to beginning the dance element of their class so that injury from stressing unprepared muscles is avoided.

2. All ballet dance steps have a name that you will need to learn. The names are mostly in French but if you repeat each step’s name as you exercise you’ll soon learn them. One way of getting a head start on this is to purchase a ballet dictionary, or print a ballet term glossary off the Internet. Learn each step carefully, making sure that you are following your dance instructor’s instructions. When first starting your class should go at a slower pace so that you get a chance to learn how to do each step properly, but as you become more experienced the pace will get quicker.

3. When you are choosing your ballet slippers, make sure they fit tightly like a glove. Do not have them fit too tight. Your ballet slippers’ drawstring should be tied loose.

4. Don’t even think about skipping the barre work! It might not be your idea of ballet dancing but it’s crucial to preparing your body for the activity ahead. Barre work aids your balance, your flexibility, your posture and of course your strength. All ballet dancers do barre work, so if you want to do ballet – take your place at the barre!

5. Does your ballet school have a strict dress code? You need to find this out before you turn up for your first class! If you wear the wrong type of clothing, even if it’s the wrong color your ballet instructor may not allow you in the room – ballet is very strict on rules! Spare money and embarrassment by doing your homework and ensuring you have exactly the right style and color of ballet clothing that your ballet school requires.

6. Ballet dance style requires certain things from your body and if you take different types of dance class you could find that you aren’t able to separate out the various poses and movements. Ballet beginners should at least have some basic ballet steps and posture requirements perfect before they participate in less formal dance styles.

7. Ballet is a very formal dance form. It is very strict about using the correct etiquette at all times. You will learn this as you learn your ballet steps, but if in doubt, always follow what your ballet teacher tells you. Even the best ballet dancers in the world respect and follow their ballet teacher’s advice.

Small classes are preferable rather than big unfriendly ones since dance is a very individual thing. It is essential to find a school that is not simply there for a profit but the success of each student. Try to find school that offer small classes of around six to twelve students per class.

Small children, especially, can soon disappear in the crowd. They may even feel a bit crowded and not want t attend class anymore. Small classes tend to build a really good environment that is conducive to learning. When they need to ask for advice there isn’t a lot of competition to be heard and there’s still enough individuals to create a dynamic.

It is significant for a student to be able to take advantage of one-on-one training to learn more about the creative art of dancing. This is because each person is unique and will have their own creativity to give to a class. Personal trainers are more often than not impractical, since it is fairly expensive and many dance routines require a group setting. On the other hand some individual lessons are a good option within the group atmosphere.

Students may need a bit of individual training to get the routine right if they have a special part in the live show. Learn at a different pace from the rest of the class:

Everybody will learn at their own speed. A good teacher will adjust the pace of the class to suit the average learning ability. Some children may learn faster and others slower than the average pace. Therefore the teacher will give these children some individual attention. When children learn slower it does not mean that they are not such good dancers, with a little help they will soon be up with the rest of the class. So do not be disheartened if your child is a slightly slower learner.

All of these factors are normal and a good teacher will understand the steps required to balance out the classes learning rate. Often the children in the group will support each other, with the dancers who have already grasped the routine helping to teach the others.

It is important to find the right learning atmosphere for your child. A young child is very susceptible to the atmosphere around them, and this will directly affect the way they learn. A small child needs a warm family atmosphere for optimum learning. They are used to being with the family in a home environment so it is sometimes hard for them to adjust to new surroundings. A warm friendly atmosphere wil help them learn faster and be more confident.

As much as possible visit some dance schools and try to observe the actual lessons. You can then evaluate if a dance school has a good environment that will encourage your child. Try to observe how a teacher interacts with the students and what sort of bond the students have with him/her. With an animated art like dance it is essential for your child to have an excellent association with the teacher. Visiting and observing will allow you to find out if the learning environment is the right one for your child.

Knowing what your child needs will help you to make the right choice of school by making sure that the learning environment is fun but also includes dance skills. Some schools take the entertainment factor too far and you will find that there is little dance skills taught. You will need to check out the curriculum and how lessons are conducted carefully, before enrolling your child.

Maintain an open communication with your child so that you can talk about what they have been doing in the dance class. Be certain that your child is happy and enjoying the class. This will be a most important sign that the learning environment is excellent for them. Also be sure that they are definitely making progress with learning the dancing basics.

A big plus is if the school allows you to observe the classes. This will allow you to monitor lessons to see that they are really right for your child and find out how your child is progressing. Family participation helps a young child to learn faster. This gives support and motivation to your child. A school that allows family participation in a child’s dance lessons is helping the student to learn better. A young child likes to talk to siblings and parents about their learning experiences and if they are allowed to discuss the dance classes the child feels proud of their accomplishments.

A friendly environment that promotes learning is not a given. Schools and teachers work very hard to accomplish the right mix of learning aids and techniques and this will be evident if you inspect a few different dance schools. Make sure that you have a clear idea of your own expectations and that of your child’s so that you can make the right decision. If dance is to be an important part of your child’s future it warrants some careful consideration as it tends to be a source of many fond memories.

When considering a dance school, the teaching standard of the instructors plays a big part in the equation. Many schools will hire very young trainers that are either still studying themselves, or just passing time while they look for a job in a different field. This is where a parent can help decide which school is the better choice.

The disadvantages of an inexperienced teacher are obvious:

They will lack the sort of skills, experience and dedication that a professional teacher will have developed.

They are part time and often are just teaching for the money rather than dedicating themselves to the pupils. They are often not even thinking of becoming teachers but really have their minds on their classes and not necessarily on the pupils.

There is a lack of maturity with very young trainers. If their experience with children has been limited they may not yet know how to run a class of young pupils. It is a common misconception that anyone can teach a class. The truth of the matter is that anyone can talk to groups of people, getting them to learn is a craft.

Professional teachers on the other hand have several advantages:

They are very knowledgeable and have spent years dedicating their lives to the art of dance. This will mean that they can use that experience to pass on a wealth of knowledge to the young students that trust them. They are a specially trained professional.

They work full time: The good thing about professional teachers is the fact that they teach full time. It is important to young children to get to know and like their dance teacher. If they are part time students and are not always there the children get confused and do not feel secure learning from different teachers. On the other hand if they learn from one or two teachers they will build up a rapport with them and learn better.

They are specially trained to teach young children and fully understand the needs of their young students. Understanding children is complex and should be a job for a professional teacher.

Dedication to their pupils comes through rigorous training and years of dance experience. Because of their love for dance they are passing on their experience to others. That level of commitment is difficult to find in a part time teacher and can often result in pupils that fall behind their other peers who have access quality teachers.

It takes a very committed and talented individual to train young people in dance. While most people find dancing comes naturally and is enjoyable, the discipline involved with refining raw talent into sculptured craft doesn’t just occur. Professional teachers have been trained to bring out the best in young people. There is a lot of persuasion involved with young people when it comes to practicing skills. It might cost a little more for a professional teacher, but it could mean the difference between a child loving dance and regretting they tried to learn.
