Tim Burton And His Life
Posted by: | CommentsTimothy William “Tim” Burton (born August 25, 1958) is an American film director. His first feature was Pee-wee’s Big Adventure in 1985; many of his subsequent films have won Academy Awards. He specialises in dark and quirky-themed films such as Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands and The Nightmare Before Christmas, but has also produced cinema blockbusters, including Batman, Batman Returns, Sleepy Hollow, Planet of the Apes, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. He frequently works with close friend Johnny Depp, musician Danny Elfman and partner Helena Bonham Carter . Burton’s most recent film Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street won the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. His most recent production is the Shane Acker animated sci-fi fantasy 9, a co-production with Timur Bekmambetov. His next film Alice in Wonderland is due for release March 5, 2010. (soundtrack for Alice in Wonderland is Almost Alice)
In 1982, Burton made his first short, Vincent, a six minute black and white stop motion film based around a poem written by the film maker, and depicting a young boy who fantasizes that he is his (and Burton’s) hero Vincent Price, with Price himself providing narration. The film was produced by Rick Heinrichs, whom Burton had befriended while working in the concept art department at Disney Studios. The film was shown at the Chicago Film Festival and released, alongside the teen drama Tex, for two weeks in one Los Angeles cinema. This was followed by Burton’s first live-action production Hansel and Gretel, a Japanese themed adaptation of the Brothers Grimm fairy tale for The Disney Channel, which climaxes in a kung-fu fight between Hansel and Gretel and the witch. Having aired once at 10:30pm on Halloween 1983 and promptly shelved, prints of the film are extremely difficult to locate, which contributes to the rumor that this project does not exist. In 2009, the short went on display in the Museum of Modern Art. Next was the live-action short Frankenweenie, starring Barret Oliver, Daniel Stern and Shelley Duvall (an early supporter of Burton’s work). (Both “Vincent” and “Frankenweenie” are on the 2-disc deluxe edition of the DVD “The Nightmare Before Christmas”)
Although Burton’s work had yet to see wide release, he began to attract the attention of the film industry. Producer Griffin Dunne approached Burton to direct After Hours (1985), a comedy about a bored word processor who survives a crazy night in SoHo, which had been passed over by Martin Scorsese. However, when financing for The Last Temptation of Christ fell through, Burton bowed out of the project out of respect for Scorsese.
Burton was married to a German-born artist for two years, whom he left to live with model and actress Lisa Marie. She acted in each of the films he made during their tenure as a couple, from 1992 to 2001, most notably in Ed Wood and Mars Attacks! Burton abruptly ended their relationship to enter into a new one with Helena Bonham Carter, whom he met while filming Planet of the Apes. Marie responded in 2005 by holding an auction of personal belongings that Burton had left behind, much to his dismay. Burton and Bonham Carter have a son, Billy Ray Burton, born October 4, 2003, and a daughter, Nell Burton, born December 15, 2007. Burton and Bonham Carter divide their time together in Los Angeles and London.
Close friend Johnny Depp is a godfather of Burton’s son. In Burton on Burton, Depp wrote the introduction, stating, “What more can I say about him? He is a brother, a friend, my son’s godfather. He is a unique and brave soul, someone that I would go to the ends of the earth for, and I know, full and well, he would do the same for me.”

Watch Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief
Posted by: | CommentsOkay I admit, I am a certified geek. I can master numbers and formulas like sandwich in lunch, I love to read and learn anything new. But I could never bring myself to be fascinated in mythology. Any kind of mythology, may it be Greek, Roman or whatever kind. I can’t seem to follow the concept and I found it hard to understand stuffs that I cannot conceptualize.
All throughout my mythology class, which I think part of my literature subject, I just usually stare at my professor . Feigning to be interested to some gods living on Mt. Olympus with superpower that can shake the earth, but in reality truthactuality my imagination is travelling somewhere, way beyond Mt. Olympus. But my idea of Greek mythology changed when I read the novel Percy Jackson & The Olympians written by Rick Riordan. The Percy Jackson & The Olympians is a 5 -book novel series, and the first book was called the “The Lightning Thief.”
Following the suit of Harry Potter Series, Lord of Rings Trilogy, and Twilight Saga, the Percy Jackson movie is joining the hype. The Percy Jackson & The Olympians series will start off with the Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief. The movie is directed by a well-known director Chris Chris Columbus. Columbus is a director who is renowned for runaway success films like Harry Potter 1 & 2, the Fantastic Four, Home Alone and many others.
The premise of the movies, as adapted from the novel, is revolved on Percy Jackson, a teenage boy who is a demigod, a half-mortal half god. Percy Jackson is unaware of his god bloodline until he was assaulted by his teacher. He, then learns that he is the son of a Greek god Poseidon, the god of sea. Percy was sent to Camp Half-Blood, a camp for kids with a Greek god parent located on Long Island.
Percy is charged of stealing Zeus’ master lightning bolt. To prove his innocence, he get on a journey across modern-day America with his friends Annabeth Chase, a demigod daughter of Athena, and Grover Underwood, a satyr, in order to save his mother and return Zeus’ stolen lightning bolt. Percy is given ten days to return Zeus bolt to Mount Olympus to prevent a war between the gods.
Starring in the Percy Jackson and The Olympians: The Lightning Thief are Logan Lerman as Percy Jackson, Brandon T. Jackson as Grover Underwood, Percy’s best friend, Alexandra Daddario as Annabeth Chase, Pierce Brosnan as Chiron, Uma Thurman as Medusa, Jake Abel as Luke Castellan, the film’s villain and many others.

Foreign Movies Extravaganza! Some Useful Information!
Posted by: | CommentsDo you ever wonder what you’re missing when you watch Foreign Language Films? Sometimes it seems like you’re looking too deep, and sometimes you feel like you’re not interpreting anything deeper at all. Neither way is wrong. You can’t look too deep, and not all foreign films are made to be interpreted. If you see something that you think can be interpreted, it probably can, so forget the question of “How do I know if I’m supposed to interpret that?”. Instead, “How do I interpret that?” is a far more reasonable question. Here are some pointers on symbolism, motifs, and everything else:
1. If you notice something, especially objects, more than once in the film, it probably means something.
2. If there is special attention given to an inanimate object, there’s usually a reason.
3. The way characters speak is important. It gives you insight into their motives and their actions.
4. Characters’ professions, especially if they are more of a background character, can help you piece other parts of the story together. When those characters speak, many times you can apply whatever they’re saying to something deeper, usually a forewarning.
5. If a character makes reference to an older story/play/movie or uses a quote from one of them, it means something.
6. Short or sudden cut scenes are not just there to throw you off track. If you think that cut scene was wierd or unnecessary, look a little deeper. Though the reason for it changes with every movie, it can usually reveal something about the character.
7. Most importantly, it can sometimes be difficult to catch everything the first time you watch a foreign film. You may get the overall idea of the movie the first time, but each subsequent time you watch it you can pick up more and more symbolism and depth. Think of it like an overstocked store: the first time you walk the aisles, you see what’s on the surface and sometimes get a glimpse of things stashed behind the front items. The more times you walk the aisles and look closer at the inventory, the more you will see behind the obvious items.
These are just a few ways to interpret foreign films, and not all of them will be used in a single film. They are just general guidelines to help you begin your journey into the foreign film world. The interpretations you’ll find on this lens are mine, and they just scratch the surface. If you have any interpretations of your own, feel free to write them in the guestbook!
