TV Show American Dad
Posted by: | CommentsAmerican Dad is a satirical American animated series owned by Underdog Productions and Fuzzy Door Productions and produced in association with 20th Century Fox Television.
It was created by Seth MacFarlane, the creator of Family Guy, as well as two former Family Guy writers, Mike Barker and Matt Weitzman. The pilot episode aired in the United States on Fox on February 6, 2005, thirty minutes after the end of Super Bowl XXXIX; the regular series began May 1, 2005, after the season premiere of Family Guy. American Dad follows the events of CIA agent Stan Smith and his family.
The series is currently in its fifth season, which premiered on September 27, 2009. It has been officially renewed for a sixth season; renewals are made ahead of time in order to facilitate the extensive production line of animated shows. Since January 2008, Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim program block reaired the show’s syndication.
The show centers around the domestic life of it’s nominal title character, Stan Smith, a staunchly conservative Republican CIA agent, and self-proclaimed uber-patriot. He is married to Francine Smith, a fairly ditzy housewife who is trying to make up for a wild youth. Their two children are Hayley Smith a passionately left-wing college-aged activist, and Steve Smith, an awkward teenage geek. The Smith family is also in posessesion of two bizarre nonhumans — Roger, an escaped alien from Area 51 who Stan is covertly housing in defiance of his employer, and Klaus, a goldfish whom the CIA implanted with the brain of an East German Olympic skier.
Plots generally center around the misadventures of various family members in their respective realms. Reoccurring themes include Stan’s desire to see Steve mature “properly,” Roger’s desires to establish a life outside of the house, and Hayley’s desire to rebel against her father’s politics.
Opening sequence
Similar to other animated shows’ opening sequences, American Dad! features a recurring gag that is changed for every episode, like The Simpsons’ couch gag and Bart Simpson’s chalkboard punishments.
This originally took the form of a newspaper headline, usually a topical, satirical joke directed at the United States Government, the media, or current affairs. Examples include “Child obesity up, pedophilia down” (“Four Little Words”), “Economy turns corner, falls down stairs” (“Roger Codger”), or “Bush finally gets joke about last name” (“Deacon Stan, Jesus Man”). A notable exception is the episode “Office Spaceman”, which has the headline, “ALIEN SPOTTED!” (featuring a picture of Roger on the front page) that shifts the sequence directly into the episode itself.
As of season 4, the opening sequence has been replaced, starting with the episode “1600 Candles”. While featuring the same music, most of the interaction with the family has been changed. Replacing the newspaper gag used in the first three seasons is Roger popping up next to Stan in the family’s SUV to sing the final “Good Morning, U.S.A.!”, wearing a different costume each time. Roger’s sudden appearance causes Stan to end the sequence by crashing into the flagpole at the C.I.A. building.

Posted by: | CommentsThe road to the silver screen hasn’t been an easy one for the latest remake of a classic Universal monster. Numerous script revisions, reshoots, issues with the musical score, editing woes, the abrupt departure of the original director-all combined to delay the film’s release for over two years. But “The Wolfman” never shows any sign of its’ troubled birth, as the filmmakers manage to deliver a slightly flawed but entertaining horror movie.
We’re introduced to Lawrence Talbot, a Shakespearean stage actor who returns to his family’s home in England; his brother’s fiancee has written him telling Talbot that he hasn’t been seen in weeks and implores him to return to the family homestead. But things have grown worse upon his arrival; his brother has been found brutally mauled by an unknown beast that prowls the area when the moon is full. His investigations into his brother’s death earn him a vicious bite by the beast, one that mysteriously heals so quickly for such a deep wound. Now Lawrence Talbot has a new role to play every full moon, one of a werewolf with an insatiable blood lust.
But things are far more complicated than just a mild case of lycanthrope. An investigator from Scotland Yard has arrived to probe the reports of the deadly monster, and his inquiries begin to point towards Talbot. Then there is also the question of the identity of the other werewolf, and its’ connection to the Talbot family history. For he soon learns that werewolves didn’t enter his life the night he was attacked, but have played a role in his life for quite a while, and it’s up to him to end the bloody cycle.
Benico Del Toro handles the role of Lawrence Talbot in an understated manner that suits the part fairly well. His is a character with private pain and traumas, and Del Toro gives him a wounded dignity along with his determination and courage. As Talbot’s father, Anthony Hopkins oozes sinister creepiness with just a touch of gong off the deep end without going over the top. Hugo Weaving is good in the supporting role of the Scotland Yard inspector; he doesn’t give his role much charisma or spark, but he infuses it with an admirable streak of dogged determination. The only weak performance is by Emily Blunt, as the fiancee of the deceased Talbot. Her performance is so subdued it hardly even seem there, and there’s little chemistry between her and Lawrence. It seems really far fetched that they fall in love, since there is nary a romantic spark between them.
We’re never shown the werewolves until over an hour into the film, and this would normally be a problem in a film entitled “The Wolfman”. But director Joe Johnston ratchet up the suspense and dramatic tension, using it to complement the darkly Gothic cinematography by Shelley Johnson. Johnston expertly stages the brutal werewolf attacks, allowing for plenty of dismemberments, disembowelment, and copious bloodletting. The transformation effects by f/x veteran Rick Baker, along with some CGI, are grotesquely wonderful and make it hard to take your eyes off the screen. Musical score by Danny Elfman nicely highlights whatever is happening onscreen.
Probably the biggest problem is the script by Andrew Kevin Walker and David Self, which ends up being kind of a mixed bag. There are some terrific scenarios of werewolf attacks, such as in London town, a gypsy camp, and even in a lecture hall of a lunatic asylum. There’s even a scene where two werewolves battle it out inside a burning house, but there’s also some problems that bog the film down. The identity of the beast that attacks Lawrence becomes fairly obvious halfway through the movie, likewise for the revelation of how his mother truly died. The romance between Lawrence and his brother’s fiancee feels forced and contrived; they barely are together long enough to get acquainted, much less fall in love. The love story feels like it was forced in later in production, and doesn’t really mesh with the film.
Watch The Wolfman (2010) is an excellent film that suffers from some story problems. It’s the perfect antidote to anyone sick of sappy films on Valentine’s Day weekend. Flaws and all, it’s still a suspenseful and gory good time.

Posted by: | CommentsThere’s no logic, rhyme or reason to much of what happens in Pierre Morel’s From Paris with Love, his kinetic shoot ‘em up actioner released almost exactly one year after his nearly $150 million 2009 hit Taken. And as much as I enjoyed Taken for its absurd-yet-entertaining action, From Paris with Love is an even more enjoyable film thanks primarily to John Travolta’s willingness to go full tilt, making up for the distraction that is Jonathan Rhys Meyers’s attempt at an American accent. Morel knows how to handle this kind of over-the-top story and the dialogue is entertaining enough it rarely allows you the opportunity to take a deeper look at what’s really going on, which is to say not all the pieces necessarily fit together.
Travolta plays Charlie Wax, an American “fixer” of sorts, sent around the world on special missions where body count isn’t necessarily a concern as much as getting the job done. Rhys Meyers plays James Reece, an intelligence operative undercover as an aide to the U.S. Ambassador in France. Occasionally called on for side jobs, Reece gets more than he’s used to when he’s asked to serve as Wax’s partner when duty assigns him to Paris. A cocaine crime lord is the immediate concern, but things change as clues are revealed and the bodies begin to stack up… and they do stack up.
Armed with guns, one-liners and little concern for personal safety, Wax’s motto is shoot first and never ask questions, which makes for a solid bit of fun, especially since Morel is more interested in keeping things moving than with literal bloodshed. From Paris with Love gets its R-rating primarily due to language and one bloody head wound you wouldn’t typically find in a PG-13 rated actioner of this sort. Taken was a rather violent film, but much of the violence happened off screen, which I guess is fine with the MPAA as they must assume people’s imaginations just aren’t that clever (yeah, right!). Paris gives you bullet-riddled bodies, but isn’t interested in an all out slaughter, and this is a definite bonus because there is much more fun to be had with action films than simply watching CG blood fly.
Producer and co-writer of Taken, Luc Besson, came up with the story which was scripted by Adi Hasak whose last credited work was 1997’s Shadow Conspiracy, but Besson’s fingers are all over this. Known for producing such films as Transporter and District 13 (also directed by Morel) and directing The Fifth Element and Leon, you should know what you’re walking into with this one. There isn’t so much an attention to making sure things make sense, as much as making sure things remain entertaining. For example, if The Hurt Locker taught us anything, explosive belts aren’t easy to disarm, had they been as easy to disarm as they are in From Paris with Love I’m not sure Hurt Locker would be up for Oscar’s Best Picture.
From Paris with Love isn’t a great film, but it’s certainly a fun one. Ignore the forced delivery of Rhys Meyers’s American accent, ignore his nonsensical final speech on love and just bask in the chaos Travolta brings and somehow gets away with and you will be hard-pressed to not walk out of From Paris with Love (2010).
