When I first started studying the history of music, I did not realize what I was getting into. I had thought that music history was somewhat of a trivial pursuit. In fact, I only took my history of classical music class because I needed the credits. I did not realize how completely fascinating music history is. You see, in our culture many of us do not really learn to understand music. For much of the world, music is a language, but for us it is something that we consumed passively. When I began to learn about the history of Western music, however, it changed all that for me. I have had some experience playing musical instruments, but I have never mastered one enough to really understand what music is all about. This class showed me.

When most of us think about the history of music, we think of the history of rock music. We assume that the history is simple because the music is simple. In fact, neither is the case. The history of music, whether you’re talking about classical music, rock music, jazz music, or any other kind, is always complicated. New chord structures are introduced bringing with them new ways of understanding the world. New rhythmic patterns are introduced, bringing with them new ways of understanding time. And music reflects all of it.

Even when the class was over, I could not stop learning about the history of music. It had whetted my appetite, and I wanted more. I got all the music history books that I could find. I even began to research forms of music that had not interested me before in the hopes of enhancing my musical knowledge further. Although I was in school studying toward something very different – a degree in engineering – I had thought about giving it up and going back to get a degree in musicology. That is how much I am fascinated by the subject.

If you have never taken a course in the history of music, you don’t know what you are missing out on. The radio will never sound the same to you again. Everything will seem much more rich, much more luminous, and much more important. A new song can reflect a new way of being, and a new way of imagining life in the world. This is what learning about the history of music means to many of us.

So eff ‘em. I guess if you want to hear what is up and coming or even touring nationally or internationally in smaller venues, you need to go the net. Mainstream radio is nothing more annoying personalities and cheesy contests to get you to listen to some irrevelant out-of-date metal song or to that hip new r&b song for the 200 hundrenth time within an hour so advertisers can vomit their overly obnoxious sales pitch REALLY LOUD! Give me an effin’ break!

Meanwhile, really excellent bands, musicians and artists, even the ones who are touring smaller venues, get no publicity. So back to the net. It is really of great magnitude to promote your band or promote your music on the web. You need to join as many indie music web sites as possible. You’ll get lost in the shuffle at Myspace. Let’s be honest, the music industry is saturated with hopeful bands, musicians and producers. How’d the band come together?

The group was formed from three other bands that grew up in the punk rock scene. My band Don’t Look Down, Nick, Peter, and Jame’s band Over It, and our bass player John’s band Rufio. We all toured together for the last five to ten years, becoming friends and working on music, and then we’re the surviving band members of these other bands, and when those bands stopped playing we formed Runner Runner.

How’d you come up with the name Runner Runner?

Runner Runner is actually a poker term, and it means beating the odds. The two perfect cards have to come to beat your opponant, and we’d like to hope that we’re going to beat the odds and make it in this music business.

How’d your recent signing come about?

We’ve been looking for a home for a long time and Capitol Records and David Lettermen’s record label, you know, feels like family to us. We were managed by David Lettermen’s company, World Wide Pants, and when Capitol Records got in the mix, David Lettermen’s company decides to just start a record label as well. And now, we’re signed to David Lettermen’s record label, Capitol Records, and a record label called MRV, and honestly it feels a lot more like family then business, so it’s pretty rad.

So you have a new album coming out in August…

September. It’s September 28th actually.

Oh ok, awesome. Tell us about the album. How was the writing and recording process for it?

Amazing. We all write in our band, and we’re always bouncing ideas off of each other and we’re constantly writing at home and on the road. And you know, I’ll write a song, Petter will write a song, Nick will write a song, we’ll all work on music together all the time. We got our producer Dave Darling in the mix. He was recommended to us from a guy at our label, and that was just a great fit. As soon as we started working with Dave, we knew it was going to be awesome. We literally narrowed about 50 songs down to 12 songs for the album. So we had a lot of music, and we’re just very excited to get it out there. It comes out in September, and we couldn’t be more excited.

What’s your favorite song off the new album?

Oooh, good question….My favorite song….One of my favorite songs is a song called “Running Away,” it’s actually the last track on the album. It’s a little darker, a little deeper then what some people might think the band is, and I think it’s a good end of the album, and it’s just a little bit darker, and I think it’s going to surprise some people. I don’t know if that’s my favorite, but I like that one a lot right now.

How would you describe your sound for people who have never heard your band before?

We’re just a pop rock band. We love writing big hooks and great lyrics. We want to move people. We want to make them dance, we want to make them feel something. Emotional, melodic, catchy, pop rock.

You’re going on tour with Secondhand Serenade. What are you looking forward to on that tour?

We know John a little bit now, and he’s a really good dude. We’re really excited for the Secondhand Serenade tour. Also the White Tie Affair is going to be playing on that tour, and we’ve already toured with those guys. We know those guys really well. It’s going to be a lot of fun, a lot of pranks! I’m sure we’re going to be messing around with those guys quite a bit, and the shows are going to be really fun so we can’t wait to get on the tour.

Can you give me one straight up random fact about each member of the band?

Alright, I’m Ryan, and I love tennis. That’s pretty random, right?

I guess [ laughs]

Nick our guitar player, it’s not really random, but he is the nicest guy in the world. The nicest guy in the world. A random fact about Peter is that he was validvictorian of his high school. Random fact about John is that his brother passed away a couple years ago, his younger brother, and he’s got a really cool tribute tattoo on his chest dedicated to his brother.

Aww, that’s really sweet.

It’s awesome. And a random fact about James is he’s in love with his motorcycle.

Does he have a name for it?

I don’t know it’s name, but he’s in love with it for sure.

There are probably many more things when it comes to your drum practice, particularly your own technique and signatures. But, just remember, you want to be working on something new at all times.

The main thing is, keep challenging yourself by never being satisfied. Strive to constantly improve during each drum practice session. Just never say again, “I don’t know what to practice.”

Here’s a fact: It’s better to be practicing drums for 5-20 minutes everyday than one or two hours on just one day per week. The key is getting into a habit of quick, regular drum practice sessions. It’s the repetition of these short drum practice sessions that will propel your drumming to new levels rather than the infrequent, marathon sessions.
