How’d the band come together?

The group was formed from three other bands that grew up in the punk rock scene. My band Don’t Look Down, Nick, Peter, and Jame’s band Over It, and our bass player John’s band Rufio. We all toured together for the last five to ten years, becoming friends and working on music, and then we’re the surviving band members of these other bands, and when those bands stopped playing we formed Runner Runner.

How’d you come up with the name Runner Runner?

Runner Runner is actually a poker term, and it means beating the odds. The two perfect cards have to come to beat your opponant, and we’d like to hope that we’re going to beat the odds and make it in this music business.

How’d your recent signing come about?

We’ve been looking for a home for a long time and Capitol Records and David Lettermen’s record label, you know, feels like family to us. We were managed by David Lettermen’s company, World Wide Pants, and when Capitol Records got in the mix, David Lettermen’s company decides to just start a record label as well. And now, we’re signed to David Lettermen’s record label, Capitol Records, and a record label called MRV, and honestly it feels a lot more like family then business, so it’s pretty rad.

So you have a new album coming out in August…

September. It’s September 28th actually.

Oh ok, awesome. Tell us about the album. How was the writing and recording process for it?

Amazing. We all write in our band, and we’re always bouncing ideas off of each other and we’re constantly writing at home and on the road. And you know, I’ll write a song, Petter will write a song, Nick will write a song, we’ll all work on music together all the time. We got our producer Dave Darling in the mix. He was recommended to us from a guy at our label, and that was just a great fit. As soon as we started working with Dave, we knew it was going to be awesome. We literally narrowed about 50 songs down to 12 songs for the album. So we had a lot of music, and we’re just very excited to get it out there. It comes out in September, and we couldn’t be more excited.

What’s your favorite song off the new album?

Oooh, good question….My favorite song….One of my favorite songs is a song called “Running Away,” it’s actually the last track on the album. It’s a little darker, a little deeper then what some people might think the band is, and I think it’s a good end of the album, and it’s just a little bit darker, and I think it’s going to surprise some people. I don’t know if that’s my favorite, but I like that one a lot right now.

How would you describe your sound for people who have never heard your band before?

We’re just a pop rock band. We love writing big hooks and great lyrics. We want to move people. We want to make them dance, we want to make them feel something. Emotional, melodic, catchy, pop rock.

You’re going on tour with Secondhand Serenade. What are you looking forward to on that tour?

We know John a little bit now, and he’s a really good dude. We’re really excited for the Secondhand Serenade tour. Also the White Tie Affair is going to be playing on that tour, and we’ve already toured with those guys. We know those guys really well. It’s going to be a lot of fun, a lot of pranks! I’m sure we’re going to be messing around with those guys quite a bit, and the shows are going to be really fun so we can’t wait to get on the tour.

Can you give me one straight up random fact about each member of the band?

Alright, I’m Ryan, and I love tennis. That’s pretty random, right?

I guess [ laughs]

Nick our guitar player, it’s not really random, but he is the nicest guy in the world. The nicest guy in the world. A random fact about Peter is that he was validvictorian of his high school. Random fact about John is that his brother passed away a couple years ago, his younger brother, and he’s got a really cool tribute tattoo on his chest dedicated to his brother.

Aww, that’s really sweet.

It’s awesome. And a random fact about James is he’s in love with his motorcycle.

Does he have a name for it?

I don’t know it’s name, but he’s in love with it for sure.

The mind is like a parachute, it only functions when it is open. That’s why it is so important to remain humble. Arrogant drummers never grow beyond their current level of drumming because they don’t think there is any more they can learn. How foolish! There is always more to learn… and any advanced drummer can learn from an intermediate, or even a beginner!

As you continue to learn you will then be able to teach. When you begin teaching, you will be amazed at the additional things you will learn (if you are currently teaching you will understand).

It’s critical to continue to learn and grow if you want to increase your level of drumming, and remaining humble is the only avenue through which you can do this. As with anything else, you must absolutely be confident in what you’re doing and knowledge can make you confident.

Please don’t mistake confidence with arrogance. Confidence is what makes a good drummer a great drummer. Arrogance is what makes a good drummer a lonely drummer! I don’t know about you, but I certainly don’t want to play music with some cocky jerk who thinks he or she is better than everyone else.

Bob Marley started his singing career with the ska genre, a form of music evolving in Jamaica as well asscratchy beats, quick tempo and the piano, guitar, and horns, said to be the forerunner to reggae music, Bob later switched to Reggae and is accredited with bringing reggae music to the forefront in Jamaica and the world. Jointly with two famed musicians – Peter Tosh and Bunny Livingston, they created the reggae group, The Wailers, which received extraordinary success in the world of music, giving pride to the Jamaican flag. Bob Marley has made significant contribution to reggae music since he is considered as the one responsible for the acceptance of raggae songs into the mainstream music industry.

He was supposed to perform in a concert in 1976 when the Jamaican political scene was somewhat violent. Before the concert was to begin, he was shot in his home, after receiving death threats because the concert was perceived to be in support of Jamaica’s Prime Minister Michael Manley. In accordance to reports, he was believed to be shot by a supporter of a rival political party. He was shot in the head but recovered from the injury.

It was on May 11, 1981 when Marley succumbed to cancer because of a soccer injury he had in the past. What began as an injury to his foot, Marley refused to let doctors remove it after it turned to cancer because it was against his religion to remove any part of his body. The desease spread to his lungs and brain and took his life due to his devout Rastafarian religious belief. He was considered an unofficial missionary of the faith because of his actions and his music. He was buried with his guitar and a marijuana bud.

Even though Bob Marley is no longer with us, his memories are still with us and his music unites millions of marijuana lovers who are looking for a way to bond with people that have parallel belief patterns and taste. His songs have not chosen a specific race or nation, because no matter where you go in this world, just about everyonehas heard of the King of Reggae. After all these years since his death, his music is still a big seller to marijuana users.
