Giving flowers or bouquets is probably the best means to communicate one’s feelings. Flowers and bouquets have come to be used for varied purposes, from wishing well to someone on the occasion of his or her birthday or anniversary to conveying an apology, or even to just see a smile on someone’s face.

Some people believe that this custom began way back during ancient times with archaeologists discovering its evidence at ancient sites. Flowers have always occupied an important place in ancient Rome and Egypt and in the glorious civilizations of ancient Greece and China whose myths and folklore clearly reflect this tradition. Giving flowers was considered the most effective means to communicate one’s feelings in these civilizations. The ancient Greeks even believed some flowers to be associated with divinity.

The Middle Ages saw a continuation of this tradition, and France and England were mainly responsible for transferring this legacy down the ages. The modern custom of assigning a meaning to each flower is believed to have been imported to Europe after the French and the British experienced it in Turkey.

The Victorian era popularized this tradition of flower gifting even more. Victorians, as we know, never expressed their feelings openly and hence the custom of gifting flowers or bouquets was considered an excellent means to convey emotions without using a lot of words.

This period saw the formulation of guidelines for giving flowers or bouquets that we use today. To take an instance, buying a bouquet of red roses from a florist and presenting to your beloved upside down would clearly vex her. This is because red roses which are otherwise associated with emotions of love can communicate negative emotions when they are gifted to the person upside down. These ideas were so in fashion that in the 19th century, a lot of books about the language of flowers were written and extensively read.

Time has not been able to diminish this custom, and people in the present times still consider flowers to be the best means to show their emotions. In the modern age, the custom of giving flowers or bouquets is rich in different meanings, and do’s and don’ts concerning the propriety of the act have acquired tremendous importance. An elegantly gifted bouquet of red roses is believed to depict love while lilies represent purity and grace. A single marigold flower is regarded as an expression of grief, whereas friendship is best exhibited by a yellow coloured rose.

Science today has helped us to grow all kinds of flowers anywhere across the globe. Any good Singapore flower shop will offer a multitude of flower varieties that are both local and imported in nature, and are suitable for communicating your heartfelt emotions in the most elegant manner.

Learn to Write Poetry

Posted by: Carrie Spry | Comments (0)

The most popular style of our time is the ‘free verse’ style. This form originated in the late 19th century, with Walt Whitman being credited for it. Before this form was introduced, poetry was restricted to certain form.

Formal poetry generally follows a set pattern, in rhyme and meter. We commonly place a letter at the end of the last word in each line. Analyzing these patterns is called scansion.

For example if the first two line rhyme with each other, their letters would be AA. If the second set of lines rhyme with each other the rhyme pattern would be AABB. If the fifth line doesn’t rhyme a C would be introduced and so on.

Meter is the number of beats in each line. The beat most commonly used is “Iambic pentameter’. Individual beats consist of a short and strong pulse. Words with this beat are arrest, domain, forsooth, etc. The second syllable is accented.

OK, enough rules and on to the fun stuff. What do you start with when you tell stories or write letters? Do you begin with something you overheard? Witnessed? Read About? Start with what you are comfortable with, that’s the best way to start.

What type of poem did you have in mind? A Story? A comment? Or could it be a character study? Go through some examples to help get you started off on the right foot. It is common to get what is called “writer’s block”. If this happens, take a break, or come back to it the next day. If your out and something comes to you, jot it down.

Work on your poem for many weeks and take the last line of one of your poem and carry on from there, ignoring entirely what you drafted before. You will be surprised at what you are able to accomplish. Get writing!

As a great quote was saying, “friendship is the bridge between Earth and Heaven”; actually, no matter how much you analyze this quote or how much you try to describe friendship in words, they could never be enough to define it. It’s all about giving instead of expecting or receiving; it’s about feeling when a friend is down and visiting him for no particular reason.. It’s about trust and confidence, it’s about sharing, it’s about another kind of love.

Being your own friend is the first condition though.. A person that is not his best friend in the first place, can’t expect to have a friendship relationship with anyone else. That idea is from classic literature and it’s true; and so is a quote, saying: “the greatest sweetener of human life is friendship”; these prove once more the value attributed to friendship in literature, whether we’re talking about classic or modern works.

There are many psychological theories that try to define friendship, such as: equity theory, rational dialectics, social exchange theory, attachment styles and many others. The common fact scientists agreed on was that confidence is the most important ingredient in this equation of friendship – it satisfies the need of humans to share their secrets – but there is one big condition: not being betrayed. Once that occurs, wounds heal very hard but in most cases never heal. In the end,we can only conclude that scientists generally agreed on common sense facts – so a the theories about friendship are still very vague and far from offering the right scientific answers.

Politics has its own take on the subject, as politicians use the word “friendship” in speeches as a powerful word that works with emotions. Humans are very receptive to this word at their subconscious level, which only means more power for the one who uses it. For example, it has even been used to define relations between states, which eroded its meaning in a way.

Since love transforms itself into a beautiful friendship in the end, we could conclude that it’s probably the best human emotion there is – but that would be trying to put it into theory again. The ones who felt it(and I’m sure anyone felt it at least once) know its sweet taste as they also know the bitter sweet of the betrayal. They’re both part of our lives and they’re here to stay.

An interesting approach literature has on the subject claims that a person should be friends with itself first, in order to be friends with others. He who hasn’t found a friend in himself, could never have one in the outside world. Another quote, saying “the greatest sweetener of human life is friendship” is also very real, and together they prove the value given to friendship by literature – may it be classical or modern.

Psychologists propose many theories for explaining friendship, such as: social exchange theory, rational dialectics, equity theory, attachment styles and so on. They concluded that confidence is the most important ingredient in a friendship – this satisfies the human need to share deep secrets without being betrayed; to build this kind of trust, time is necessary, but once the rules broken – wounds don’t heal very easy, or they don’t heal at all. In the end, as we can imagine, friendship can’t really be put into theory exactly, but certain characteristics do apply.

The word “friendship” itself is even used in some political speeches, as it is a very powerful emotion modifier. People are sensitive about this word, and not at their conscious level – that’s why it’s so powerful. It was even used to define relationships between states, although this unnaturalized the meaning of it in a way.

In the end, we can never tell if this or love is the greatest human emotion; anyone felt it at least once, and you must know its importance; as you also must know the sour taste of betrayal. But these are both parts of life as we know it, and when we draw the line we notice that the world is interconnected through this wonderful emotion.
