Nature photography requires all the usual camera skills, so it is important to know how to use your camera. But really good nature photography also requires sensitivity to nature.

Have you ever met someone who has thousands of dollars worth of gear, can talk all day about cameras and lenses…but still takes lousy photos? Such people fail to understand that good photographers are not judged by the equipment they use, but by their results. Of course technical knowledge is important, but it will only take you so far.

When it comes to nature photography, it is essential to understand how natural light can trasform the impact of a photo.

I have a simple saying for nature photographers to live by: you can’t take a good photo in a bad situation. This simply means if you approach your subject at the wrong time of day, or in the wrong weather conditions, no amount of technology is going to solve the problem. On the other hand, if you get the light right, you don’t need any technical wizardry to get the shot. Nature does most of the work for you.

As soon as light is mentioned, most people automatically think early morning and late afternoon. Any photographer with an ounce of experience soon learns that these are generally the best times to take nature photos. Although it is not true all the time, it is a good place to start.

When the sun is very low in the sky, it creates a soft, warm light that is very attractive in a photo. Shining from a low angle, it also illuminates the face of the subject more evenly. Furthermore, due to the lower contrast, the shadows you can see are less harsh than in the middle of the day. So for several reasons, early morning (up to about 9am) and late afternoon towards sunset are often the best times to take your photos.

Most people know this. The trouble is, most people don’t make the extra effort to put it into practice. Are you prepared to camp overnight to be on location at sunrise to get the perfect shot? If photography is important enough to you, you will go to these lengths and more. It may seem like a lot of trouble, but once you get that once-in-a-lifetime image you will agree that the reward was worth the effort. This is standard practice for a nature photographer.

Should all nature photography be done in the early morning or late afternoon? In a word: no.

All rules are made to be broken. You would be mistaken to think that this one simple approach works all the time. So what are some of the exceptions?

Black and white photography is a little different from other photography. Instead of subjects being defined by subtle shades of colour, black and white photography makes use of strong lines and shadows. The best effect can be produced by higher contrast in the light. So when you are thinking black and white photography, you may find yourself seeking the brighter light of the middle part of the day.

Rainforest photography is another departure from general landscape photography. Under the rainforest canopy, the sunlight can become such a patchwork of light and shade that a perfect exposure is impossible. For the best results in the rainforest, I usually look for overcast conditions, with perhaps a little mist for added atmosphere. To avoid a too-dark image, I take my photos in the middle part of the day, when the light is bright, but evenly dispersed by the cloudy conditions.

When it comes to wildlife photography, you can take a lesson from the landscape and a lesson from the rainforest. If you photograph your subject in sunlight, early in the morning and late in the afternoon is usually best. This approach reduces contrast and bathes your subject in soft, warm light.

However, some wildlife subjects are best captured on a cloudy day, just like in the rainforest. The muted light eliminates a lot of glare, so shiny surfaces (a frog’s skin, a bird’s feathers etc) can appear much clearer and more colourful on a cloudy day. The lower contrast of this light also means important details of the subject will not be lost in shadow.

This is by no means an exhaustive list of examples. You could go on forever identifying which subjects work best in different types of light. I simply hope these ideas get you thinking about natural light and how it can improve your photography. Once you let nature do most of the work for you, will may just find that the technical aspects of photography become a little less challenging.

Bernie Mac (Death of an Icon)

Posted by: admin | Comments (2)

Bernie Mac, the Emmy and Golden Globe nominated actor and comedian who worked his way to Hollywood success from an impoverished upbringing on Chicago’s South Side, died Saturday at age 50. “Actor/comedian Bernie Mac passed away this morning from complications due to pneumonia in a Chicago area hospital,” his publicist, Danica Smith, said in a statement from Los Angeles. The comedian suffered from sarcoidosis, an inflammatory lung disease That produces tiny lumps of cells in the body’s organs, but had said the condition went into remission in 2005. Though the cause of death has not been confirmed, Mac had been hospitalized recently for pneumonia. He contracted pneumonia for the first time in 2004 while filming Ocean’s Twelve.

 Bernie Mac

Actor and comedian Bernie Mac is being remembered for his larger-than-life persona and his devotion to family.

He never lost track of where he came from, and he’d often use real life experiences, his family, his friends, in his routine. His family was the most important thing in the world to him. He grew up in Chicago in a rough neighborhood, with a large family living under one roof. In 1983, he was laid off at GM, and for a time his family had to move in with relatives. While Mac did cuss, his comedy was, as is befitting a man married for more than 30 years, rooted in family. In real life, Bernie “Mac” McCollough was married with one daughter; Mac’s character on the Bernie MAc Show (a stand-up comedian) was married with no kids of his own.

Before his 10th birthday, Mac was performing comedy standup, honing his skills on CTA trains and parks before graduating to well-known haunts like the Regal Theater and the Cotton Club. In 1977, at age 20, he took that act to comedy clubs in Chicago. His work hit home to the African American audience — his aggressive, brash comedy had a down home feel to it, tackling everything from family life to black romantic relationships — yet Mac was able to cross it over, connecting with a majority entertainment scene. “When I started in comedy in the clubs in 1977, blacks couldn’t do certain clubs — not because they were segregated”. Mac got his respect and he gained national attention after his set on HBO’s popular late-night series Def Comedy Jam in 1992. In the late 1990s, he had a recurring role in “Moesha,” the UPN network comedy starring pop star Brandy. Mac sowed the seeds for his success on a cloudy day in North Carolina while taping the 2000 Spike Lee concert film “The Original Kings of Comedy”. He won the Miller Lite Comedy Search at the age of 32, at which point his popularity as a comedian began to grow. A performance on HBO’s Def Comedy Jam thrust him into the spotlight. He also was nominated for a Grammy award for best comedy album in 2001 along with his “The Original Kings of Comedy” co-stars. Mac was one of the few African American comedic actors to be able to break out of the traditional “black comedy” genre, having roles in the 2001 remake of Ocean’s Eleven and becoming the new Bosley for the Charlie’s Angels sequel Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle. His film career started with a small role as a club doorman in the Damon Wayans comedy “Mo’ Money” in 1992. In 2000, Mac returned to his stand-up comedy roots, touring the country as one of The Original Kings of Comedy, along with Steve Harvey, Cedric the Entertainer and D. Mac was number 72 on Comedy Central’s list of the 100 greatest standups of all time.

In 2001, the Fox network took a gamble on “The Bernie Mac Show,” an unconventional family comedy Praised by the critics for its fresh, irreverent take on the family sitcom, it became one of Fox’s biggest hits. The show was loosely based on Mac’s stand-up comedy acts. The pilot episode, aired on November 14, 2001, set up the basic premise for the show: the character Bernie Mac takes in his sister’s children after she enters rehab (a premise taken from one of Mac’s routines in the 2000 film, The Original Kings of Comedy). For his role in the show, Bernie Mac was honored by the Television Critics Association for Individual Achievement in a Comedy as well as the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series four years in a row: 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2006. In the fall of 2002, the show aired against the Damon Wayans comedy My Wife & Kids which may have hurt the show’s momentum in the ratings during the first half of the show’s second season run. According to NAACP’s analysis, FOX’s cancellation of The Bernie Mac Show means that for the first time in recent history, there is not a comedy with an African American lead character on the four major broadcast networks, FOX, CBS, NBC and ABC.

Recently, Mac’s brand of comedy caught him flack when he was heckled during a surprise appearance at a July fundraiser for Democratic presidential candidate and fellow Chicagoan Barack Obama.

Bernie Mac had been been performing for near 40 years, and was ready to start considering semi-retirement to spend more time with his family.

Bernie Mac blended style, authority and a touch of self-aware bluster to make audiences laugh as well as connect with him. Bernie Mac, the gravelly voiced Original King of Comedy whose brutally honest and straight-to-the-point humor earned him a successful TV and film career will truly be missed by his friends, family, and strangers alike who he made laugh on a daily basis.

God Bless The Mac Family, and help them get thru this hard time.

Staying Home Entertainment

Posted by: admin | Comments (1)

Home entertainment is no longer limited to the home. Together with portable media devices, they suggest that the future of home entertainment is going to look a lot like Microsoft’s Media Center or the Apple TV, but it may increase the need for a computer. It seems the newest craze hitting our home entertainment is the online movie store. The world of home entertainment is changing rapidly, and consumers have a wide range of options. The future of home entertainment is here.

Television shows have also stepped up innovative marketing in recent months. Watching movies in our homes is big business these days with our plasma televisions, surround sound home theater systems and all the gadgets that come with them. Complete access to real-time news and exclusive analysis that goes behind the scenes from film to television, home video to digital media. How it works Technically, a home cinema could be as basic as a simple arrangement of a television, VCR, and a set of speakers. Even if households have the system set up for home cinema it is common only to use the speakers integrated within the television rather than to play the sound through the surround sound system. Twenty five years ago, only a small percentage of households in the United States had cable television, and VCRs were a brand-new luxury item. Sound systems, for the most part, were limited to the small speaker built into the television, and not many people had a screen larger than 27 inches. Households now get at least 50 channels and have a good-sized color television and a VCR or DVD surround system. Even for the lowest income bracket, the percent of households with cable or satellite television is 64 percent.

There are a few main components that make watching TV and going to the movies very different. We enjoy going to the movies because we can see everything so well. Portability – Downloaded movies can be viewed on a variety of portable devices including laptops and Windows Mobile™–based Portable Media Centers. When you begin your search for the perfect download service, look for a service that has the type of movies you want that are compatible with your video playing devices. Movie Selection – Whichever service you choose, it should provide a good variety of the kind of movies you like. “There’s no question that the way movies are delivered over the long term will change,” said Friendland. The second difference is access to the movies is offered on a monthly subscription basis. “With the click of a button, users would be able to quickly download any of the movies through iTunes, which could begin playing as flick is downloading, according to the survey. As many as 300 VOD movies may be available for free or included in a subscription or a pay-per-view service. Much, much cheaper than buying basic or Hi-Def movies. Download sites get their movies from movie studios, which own the digital rights to the films. I usually do Movies Here, now with this new service I can download a great movie or catch up on a T.V. show That was missed. Download services has the potential to completely revolutionize the way people watch movies,” PA quoted Peter Smith, president of Universal Pictures International, as saying.

Not only is consumer demand high; home entertainment is a traditionally high-margin industry (especially the lucrative speaker cable sector), and new technology is bringing in even more interest and profit. Home entertainment is really important to a lot of the younger buyers, so it’s really hard to pinpoint who the average buyer is. People like that they can add the home electronics into their mortgages. It is important to note that consumer’s budget of time and finances on home entertainment is not unlimited. Having home entertainment is important to most households, and considering the economy, staying home is “the in-thing to do.”
