Interview: Runner Runner

Runner Runner is a band rising from the ashes of previous bands Over It, Don’t Look Down, and Rufio. Making fun catchy music is what the band does best, and their talent was recognized by Capitol Records who signed them along with David Lettermen’s label, C.E. Music, and the label MRV. The band has begun to see success with their uber catchy single “So Obvious,” which has been playing on different radio stations across the country, and the band is about to embark on a nationwide tour with fellow pop rockers Secondhand Serenade and The White Tie Affair. Read our interview below to learn more about the band, and their new album that releases out on September 28th!

How’d the band come together?
The group was formed from three other bands that grew up in the punk rock scene. My band Don’t Look Down, Nick, Peter, and Jame’s band Over It, and our bass player John’s band Rufio. We all toured together for the last five to ten years, becoming friends and working on music, and then we’re the surviving band members of these other bands, and when those bands stopped playing we formed Runner Runner.
How’d you come up with the name Runner Runner?
Runner Runner is actually a poker term, and it means beating the odds. The two perfect cards have to come to beat your opponant, and we’d like to hope that we’re going to beat the odds and make it in this music business.
How’d your recent signing come about?
We’ve been looking for a home for a long time and Capitol Records and David Lettermen’s record label, you know, feels like family to us. We were managed by David Lettermen’s company, World Wide Pants, and when Capitol Records got in the mix, David Lettermen’s company decides to just start a record label as well. And now, we’re signed to David Lettermen’s record label, Capitol Records, and a record label called MRV, and honestly it feels a lot more like family then business, so it’s pretty rad.
So you have a new album coming out in August…
September. It’s September 28th actually.
Oh ok, awesome. Tell us about the album. How was the writing and recording process for it?
Amazing. We all write in our band, and we’re always bouncing ideas off of each other and we’re constantly writing at home and on the road. And you know, I’ll write a song, Petter will write a song, Nick will write a song, we’ll all work on music together all the time. We got our producer Dave Darling in the mix. He was recommended to us from a guy at our label, and that was just a great fit. As soon as we started working with Dave, we knew it was going to be awesome. We literally narrowed about 50 songs down to 12 songs for the album. So we had a lot of music, and we’re just very excited to get it out there. It comes out in September, and we couldn’t be more excited.
What’s your favorite song off the new album?
Oooh, good question….My favorite song….One of my favorite songs is a song called “Running Away,” it’s actually the last track on the album. It’s a little darker, a little deeper then what some people might think the band is, and I think it’s a good end of the album, and it’s just a little bit darker, and I think it’s going to surprise some people. I don’t know if that’s my favorite, but I like that one a lot right now.
How would you describe your sound for people who have never heard your band before?
We’re just a pop rock band. We love writing big hooks and great lyrics. We want to move people. We want to make them dance, we want to make them feel something. Emotional, melodic, catchy, pop rock.
You’re going on tour with Secondhand Serenade. What are you looking forward to on that tour?
We know John a little bit now, and he’s a really good dude. We’re really excited for the Secondhand Serenade tour. Also the White Tie Affair is going to be playing on that tour, and we’ve already toured with those guys. We know those guys really well. It’s going to be a lot of fun, a lot of pranks! I’m sure we’re going to be messing around with those guys quite a bit, and the shows are going to be really fun so we can’t wait to get on the tour.
Can you give me one straight up random fact about each member of the band?
Alright, I’m Ryan, and I love tennis. That’s pretty random, right?
I guess [ laughs]
Nick our guitar player, it’s not really random, but he is the nicest guy in the world. The nicest guy in the world. A random fact about Peter is that he was validvictorian of his high school. Random fact about John is that his brother passed away a couple years ago, his younger brother, and he’s got a really cool tribute tattoo on his chest dedicated to his brother.
Aww, that’s really sweet.
It’s awesome. And a random fact about James is he’s in love with his motorcycle.
Does he have a name for it?
I don’t know it’s name, but he’s in love with it for sure.

In case you pay more Attention to children’s films you will notice that all of the families kids come from are not tradition. For example, Cinderella was raised by step mother who was rather wicked; The little Mermaid also did not know her mother because she was raised by king Triton.
Even if the movie does not seem to be devoted to divorce topic not always we are able to find out where some parent is. Usually, such films display teenagers who are subjected to a lot of difficulties and who have to deal with inadequacy with parental environment. However, they are looking for something much more and try to find their parents and build happy family again. Very often we wonder why children are interested in these films so much. However, the reason for that is children’s desire to get more from their parents. The nature of human life is that children get less from the parents in comparison what they really want. No matter whether we have two parents, only parent or even a stepparent we always want more. Very often teenagers try o explore the past of their families because they are looking for love and support. For example, if you watch “Wizard from Oz” you will see that the protagonist Dorothy has a wonderful adventure together with male adults who are really inadequate. However, they help her to confront a scary woman and as a result she realizes that they are the same as we are and they are also looking fore better life together with people who will love them a lot.
There are a lot of different movies featuring teenagers who do not have normal families because of the divorces or even death. However, if we watch them we notice that it is always possible to find people you will feel comfortable with. It is necessary to try to achieve good results.

We are just drawn by the power they have. Fortunately, there are a lot of celebrities who use their influence for good. Among them are Bono, Angelina Jolie and Bill Gates. Bono is known for spending money all over the world on different charities. At the same time Bill Gated decided to sell his billion company because he had a strong desire to become a full time philanthropist. For sure, we heard a lot about Angelina Jolie who travels to the third world countries and provide them with necessary aid. Besides, she also builds homes for children who are in dire need of them.
In that case we realize that it is necessary top use leverage for good things and not for bad ones. If to analyze the situation we have today, it has to b said that we need celebrities greatly. We are need of their power and influence that can be used for good of the world. There are no doubts that they have really huge money and can have their lives the way they want, but at the same time celebrities inspire us. They are able to do good things and it is always great when they do that.
