Whether you admit it or not, music imbeds our daily life, weaving its beauty and emotion through our thoughts, activities and memories. When I first started studying the history of music, I did not realize what I was getting into. I had thought that music history was somewhat of a trivial pursuit. In fact, I only took my history of classical music class because I needed the credits. I did not realize how completely fascinating music history is. You see, in our culture many of us do not really learn to understand music. For much of the world, music is a language, but for us it is something that we consumed passively. When I began to learn about the history of Western music, however, it changed all that for me. I have had some experience playing musical instruments, but I have never mastered one enough to really understand what music is all about. This class showed me.

When most of us think about the history of music, we think of the history of rock music. We assume that the history is simple because the music is simple. In fact, neither is the case. The history of music, whether you’re talking about classical music, rock music, jazz music, or any other kind, is always complicated. New chord structures are introduced bringing with them new ways of understanding the world. New rhythmic patterns are introduced, bringing with them new ways of understanding time. And music reflects all of it.

Even when the class was over, I could not stop learning about the history of music. It had whetted my appetite, and I wanted more. I got all the music history books that I could find. I even began to research forms of music that had not interested me before in the hopes of enhancing my musical knowledge further. Although I was in school studying toward something very different – a degree in engineering – I had thought about giving it up and going back to get a degree in musicology. That is how much I am fascinated by the subject.

If you have never taken a course in the history of music, you don’t know what you are missing out on. The radio will never sound the same to you again. Everything will seem much more rich, much more luminous, and much more important. A new song can reflect a new way of being, and a new way of imagining life in the world. This is what learning about the history of music means to many of us.

The high step is used by a great number of colleges and universities such as all the Big Ten Conference bands, the University of California- Berkeley Cal Band, the University of Southern California Spirit of Troy, The University of Washington Husky Marching Band, and The Pride of Oklahoma Marching Band, the Lehigh University Marching 97, as well as most Historically Black Colleges or Universities such as Grambling State Univeristy and Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University.

The leg is then put down, and this is repeated with the other leg.

They generally call this manner of step as the “chair step”. Many schools in the Big Ten Conference practice this style and it is also the style for many HBCU bands.

The extended high step is another one, very physically demanding, style of high step marching. This variant of step demands the thigh to be parallel to the ground and perpendicular to the body with the lower leg extended outward at a 45-degree angle from the body (135-degrees from the thigh), toes directed downward. The leg is then driven quickly back to the ground while the other leg repeats in this manner. Simultaneously, the upper body swaggers 22.5-degrees left or right of center with each step of the marcher.

The most important part of this manner of marching is known as “stop action,” which means all movement stops for an instant at the apex of each step.

This demands a marching band to have a great deal of strength, but has very effective visual impression. This style is common among most marching bands of the Big Ten Conference
Glide step and roll step
A lot of bands use some variation of the glide step, also known as the roll step.

This step consist in bringing the heel gently to the ground with the toe pointed up, and then rolling forward onto the toes before lifting the foot or moving on the ball of the foot with heel elevated when backwards marching. Actually this style is a direct imitation of drum and bugle corps. It gives the drill a fluid and smooth appearance, and provides better control of the complex formations and various music styles played by those bands which roll step.

Furthermore, walking in place allows performing of a much broader range of tempos; the correct execution of a roll step will give a player marching at 40 beats per minute the same smooth tone as a player who is marching at 180.

The roll step provides much better control of the upper body, and better control of the air support required for playing. The proper and correct form protects the wind player from bouncing and moving around unnecessarily, thus producing an unstable tone. Marching percussionists as a rule use a roll step solely when a high step is impossible because of drum harnesses.

Stuart was also part of other bands such as NailBombs and Stone Gods. Recently he was a member of a band Killing For Company who performed in the new Libery Stadium in Swansea and became the first band to play a gig there. He also had a passion for being a host on a radio or a tv show and he got his chance in 2002 where he was given his first TV chat show by BBC Wales. In 2005 he had his own radio show in BBC Radio Wales calles Cable Connects.

His death appeared just few hours after his ex band Stereophonics gig in Cardiff. Before his death he spoke to Kelly on Saturday wishing him the best of luck for the gig. Stuart’s death post-mortem is going to be carried out later this week. His last night was in Aberdare in Welsh Harp public house.

Now some of you may say i don’t really get the time as im pretty busy and don’t get time to put music on. Hmm think again about your day. Go back in your mind to this morning.
Did your alarm clock wake you? Was the alarm set to music? Then you had breakfast right where you listening to music while you were eating? Or maybe the kids had the stereo on while you were eating?

Ok so you got in the car and drove to work while you were driving the radio was on. No i get it you took the bus to work was there any music on the bus or was there people sitting next to you playing there ipods that you could hear?
Now you are at work does someone in your office or workplace put music on to help them work?
Right after work you go pick up something at the shops. Did the lift have music playing? Did the shop itself have music?

Hmm you still say no to the above? But i bet you watched TV when you got home right and the ad breaks had music?

My point is it is amazing to see how often we actually listen to music throughout our day and didn’t even realize!
